SSI trains WHO Uganda staff in scientific writing
Kampala 22 August 2016 - The World Health Organization (WHO) country office in Uganda organized a 5-day training workshop to build capacity of staff in Scientific writing at Hotel Africana in Kampala, in collaboration with Sustainable Sciences Institute (SSI) which trained the staff.
The WHO Country Representative in Uganda (WR), Dr. Wondimagegnehu Alemu officially opened the training workshop and said that writing is an important skill for staff in WHO. He further said that with improved scientific writing skills, staff will be able to write and publish their works, as well as write proposals to secure funds for WHO work in Uganda.
Dr. Maria Elena Penaranda and Dr. Robert Beatty from SSI equipped staff with skills on structuring manuscripts, data presentation, formatting manuscripts and description of the submission and review process. Participants further received individual tutoring from the instructors where their manuscripts were reviewed and edited. The instructors pledged continued additional support to staff and encouraged them to seek guidance whenever they need to.
At the end of the workshop, Dr. Maria thanked the WHO staff for their commitment to the training workshop and encouraged them to persevere and not lose morale when writing.
Dr. Alemu also commended the staff for their dedication to the training and added that the activity is beneficial to the WHO country office. He further said that WHO being a technical organization that is tasked to give highly researched and evidence based technical advice to the different governments it works with, scientific writing comes in handy.
